Hill Country Events Guide: August Through October 2026
August through October is the sweet spot of the year in the Texas Hill Country. The summer heat starts to ease, the bright midday light over the lakes is stunning, and every weekend seems to have something worth doing. I have put together this guide to help you plan the next few months — whether you are a long-time resident, new to the area, or just considering a move.
This edition focuses on the most immediate events: the Canyon Lake Car Show, the Mermaid Capital of Texas Fest in San Marcos, the Sacred Springs Powwow, Austin City Limits Music Festival, BOO! Hole Halloween in Wimberley, the San Antonio Día de los Muertos River Parade, and the Sights & Sounds of Christmas in San Marcos. I have also included the weekly markets and community gatherings that make Hill Country living what it is.
If you are considering a move to the Hill Country, I cannot recommend a better way to explore than by attending a few of these events. They tell you more about a community than any website can.
STARTZ Market Days
A newer market that has quickly become a Canyon Lake favorite. Local vendors, handmade items, artisan wares, and live music set on a family-friendly patio at The Island. This is the kind of relaxed Sunday afternoon that makes lake living what it is. If you are thinking about a move to Canyon Lake, come spend a Sunday here — you will meet the neighbors before you even buy a house.
More DetailsAustin PRIDE Festival & Parade
Central Texas' largest LGBTQ+ celebration, drawing over 200,000 people to downtown Austin. The parade marches down Congress Avenue, and the festival at Fiesta Gardens features live music, food vendors, and community resources all day. For Hill Country residents, this is one of those events that reminds you why living within an hour of Austin is such an advantage — you get the quiet of lake or small-town life with world-class city events a short drive away.
More DetailsMermaid Capital of Texas Fest — Mermaid SPLASH
San Marcos has fully embraced its identity as the Mermaid Capital of Texas, and this festival is the proof. A cocktail competition, the Mermaid Promenade parade through downtown, and a river-front faire that celebrates the unique culture of this Hill Country river town. San Marcos is an easy drive from both Canyon Lake and Wimberley, and the river setting makes it a perfect Hill Country weekend.
More Details20th Annual Canyon Lake Car Show
A free community event hosted by the Canyon Lake Car Club and the Canyon Lake POA. Classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles line the grounds at Canyon Lake Lodge with the lake as the backdrop. This is the kind of event where you see the same faces year after year — and if you are new to the area, you will be welcomed like you have been here all along. October is about as good as it gets in the Hill Country weather-wise.
More DetailsSacred Springs Powwow
A two-day celebration of Native American culture, art, traditions, and languages of the Coahuiltecan people. Over 100 Native dancers from across Texas, gourd dancers, Aztec exhibitions, and artisan vendors. The powwow honors the sacred springs of San Marcos, which have been a gathering place for indigenous peoples for thousands of years. This is the kind of event that gives you a deeper appreciation for the history of the land we live on.
More DetailsAustin City Limits Music Festival
One of the country's largest music festivals, with over 140 artists across two weekends in Zilker Park. The lineup draws from every genre, and the setting — Zilker Park with the Austin skyline — is hard to beat. For Hill Country residents, ACL is close enough to enjoy without the hassle of city living. If you are considering a move to the area, a weekend at ACL gives you a real taste of what makes Central Texas such a vibrant place to live.
More DetailsBOO! Hole Halloween
A free, family-friendly Halloween celebration at one of Wimberley's most beloved natural landmarks. Trick-or-treat trail, costume contest, haunted hayride, carnival games, photo booth, apple cider, and s'mores around the fire. This is the kind of event that makes Wimberley feel like a small town — because it is. If you are considering a move, this is the weekend to come see what community looks like in the Hill Country.
More DetailsSan Antonio Día de los Muertos River Parade
One of the most beautiful events on the River Walk. Decorated barges float down the San Antonio River with colorful altars, costumes, and music celebrating Día de los Muertos. The river parade is a San Antonio tradition that draws visitors from across the state. For Hill Country residents, it is an easy drive and a reminder that San Antonio's cultural calendar is one of the best in Texas.
More DetailsSights & Sounds of Christmas — San Marcos
Six evenings of holiday cheer in San Marcos' historic Plaza Park. Carnival rides, arts and crafts, pictures with Santa, local school performances, a live nativity scene, food court, and thousands of holiday lights. This is one of those small-town Christmas events that reminds you why people choose the Hill Country. San Marcos is an easy drive from Canyon Lake, Wimberley, and New Braunfels — a perfect December evening out.
More DetailsMaking the Most of Hill Country Events
A few things I have learned from nearly four decades of living and working in Central Texas:
- Late summer is still warm. August and early September afternoons in Central Texas are hot. Hydrate, wear a hat, and look for shade. By late September and October, the evenings are beautiful and you will want a light jacket.
- Weekend events fill up. Popular markets and festivals draw good crowds. Arrive early for better parking and the best selection from vendors.
- Make a day of it. Most of these events are in walkable areas with restaurants, shops, and Hill Country scenery nearby. Pair the festival with lunch on a patio or a stroll through town.
- Use events to explore communities. If you are considering a move to Wimberley, Canyon Lake, New Braunfels, or anywhere in the Hill Country, attending a local event tells you more about a community than any website can. You will see how people interact, what they value, and whether it feels like home.
- San Antonio and Austin are close. One of the best things about living in the Hill Country is that both cities are within an hour or so. You get the peace of lake or small-town living with world-class city events nearby.
"The Hill Country has a way of bringing people together — at markets, at music halls, at holiday lightings, and around backyard tables. If you are thinking about making this area home, come spend a weekend here. You will understand why people do not leave."
