Hill Country Events Update: Early Fall Festivals and Gatherings
I went through the community calendars again this week across every area I serve, and early fall is filling in fast. This update focuses on what is actually next on the calendar: Wimberley Market Days this Saturday, then a busy first full weekend of October across Canyon Lake, New Braunfels, San Marcos, Austin, and Fredericksburg, with a couple of November favorites worth marking now.
A note on the earlier event guides on this blog: they stay up as an archive of the season so far. This post is the one to bookmark. Everything in it has been rechecked this week, with dates, locations, and official links, so it reflects what is coming up right now.
This is the stretch of the year I love most around here. The heat finally backs off, the lakes cool down, and every town has a reason to gather outside. If you are scouting the Hill Country lifestyle from out of town, these next few weekends are the perfect homework.
Wimberley Market Days
Central Texas' largest outdoor market returns the first Saturday of every month through December. More than 450 vendors line Lion's Field selling antiques, artisan crafts, home goods, jewelry, and fresh local produce, with live music on the grounds and the Wimberley Lions Club BBQ booth serving brisket sandwiches. Admission is free. If you are new to Wimberley, this is the fastest way to feel the community's pulse, and the cooler fall dates are the best of the year for it.
More DetailsFredericksburg Oktoberfest
The Hill Country's biggest Oktoberfest fills Marktplatz with German music, dancing, food, and a family-friendly polka-fueled weekend. Beyond the beer, it is a celebration of the same German heritage that shaped New Braunfels, so it feels like a natural cousin to Wurstfest. Fredericksburg is an easy drive from Canyon Lake and Wimberley, and October weather on the square is about as good as Texas gets.
More DetailsAustin City Limits Music Festival
ACL runs two consecutive weekends in Zilker Park with dozens of artists across eight stages, set right against the Austin skyline. It is a big one, so plan ahead, but the setting is hard to beat: live music, Barton Springs nearby, and thousands of people doing the same easygoing thing. For anyone considering the Austin side of the Hill Country commute, it is also a fun, low-pressure way to spend a weekend in town.
More DetailsCanyon Lake Car Show
The Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosts this annual car show that brings classics, customs, and muscle cars out under the Hill Country oaks. It is a laid-back, family-friendly morning where neighbors talk shop and the lake breeze keeps it comfortable. Check the Chamber calendar for the exact location and entry details, and bring the kids, they love it.
More DetailsSacred Springs Powwow
The Indigenous Cultures Institute's annual Sacred Springs Powwow gathers more than 100 native dancers, drum groups, artists, and vendors on the shores of Spring Lake in San Marcos. It is one of the most meaningful cultural gatherings in the region, honoring the area's Coahuiltecan heritage, and it pairs beautifully with a walk around Spring Lake and the San Marcos River. Admission supports the nonprofit and the experience is one of the most memorable on the fall calendar.
More DetailsCanyon Lake BBQ Cook-Off
The 27th annual Real Texas Bar-B-Que Cook-Off, hosted by the Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, brings competition cooks to Canyon Park for a full day of smoked brisket, ribs, and barbecue judging. It is the Chamber's signature October fundraiser, with live music, vendors, and lake country hospitality. For sellers and buyers alike, it is also the friendliest way to meet half of Canyon Lake in one afternoon.
More DetailsGruene Music & Wine Festival
The 40th annual Gruene Music & Wine Festival, presented by Gruene Hall and KNBT 92.1 FM, fills the historic district with live music, Texas wine tastings, and food vendors. Gruene Hall's own calendar around the festival is stacked: Robert Earl Keen plays October 8, Shane Smith & the Saints play October 9, and Casey Donahew plays the weekends before at the hall. With the Guadalupe River running through the district, this is the signature New Braunfels weekend of the fall.
More DetailsWimberley Arts Fest
The Wimberley Valley Art League's Arts Fest returns in its new fall home, now merged with the Blue Agave Art Fair into a single weekend. Juried artists from across Texas set up near Wimberley Square with painting, sculpture, jewelry, and fiber art, alongside live music and food. It is the kind of weekend that reminds you why Wimberley's art scene is a big part of what draws people here, and a perfect excuse to spend the day on the square.
More DetailsTexas Book Festival
The 31st annual Texas Book Festival is free and open to the public across the Capitol grounds, with author panels, book signings, a full kids' chapter, and food vendors on Congress Avenue. It draws some of the biggest names in writing to Austin every November. For retirees and book lovers across the Hill Country, it is an easy day trip with the added bonus of strolling the Capitol grounds in fall weather.

A few notes from my years around here that might help you plan the next six weeks:
- This Saturday belongs to Wimberley. Market Days on September 5 is the free, family-friendly way to see the town at its best, and the October 3 edition lands in the same weekend as the Canyon Lake Car Show, so you could do both.
- The first weekend of October is the busiest of the fall. Fredericksburg Oktoberfest, ACL in Austin, the Canyon Lake Car Show, and the Sacred Springs Powwow in San Marcos all fall on October 2 through 4. Pick one, or split the weekend, but plan lodging early if you are coming from out of town.
- Canyon Lake does October in two big beats. The Car Show on October 3 and the Chamber's BBQ Cook-Off at Canyon Park on October 10. For buyers scouting the lake, both are the friendliest possible introductions to the community.
- New Braunfels is stacked for music. The 40th annual Gruene Music & Wine Festival runs October 8 through 11, and Gruene Hall has confirmed Robert Earl Keen on October 8, Shane Smith & the Saints on October 9, Casey Donahew on October 2 and 3, and Dylan Wheeler on October 16. Tickets sell out, so grab them early.
- Wimberley's art season peaks mid-October. The Arts Fest on October 17 and 18, now merged with the Blue Agave Art Fair, is the one to circle if you are considering a second home or retirement here. It shows you exactly what makes the town tick.
- Book lovers get Austin in November. The Texas Book Festival on November 14 and 15 is free on the Capitol grounds and worth the drive from anywhere in the Hill Country.
“Fall in the Hill Country is when the community comes back outside, and there is no better way to get to know a town than standing in line with your neighbors for barbecue or walking a festival grounds under the oaks. That is the lifestyle people move here for, and it is the lifestyle I help clients find every day.”
Steve Giannone
If you are thinking about a move to any of these communities, pick the event that fits your family and go. You will see how a town treats its visitors, its traditions, and its families, and that tells you more than any listing page can. And whenever you want, I am happy to answer questions about the neighborhoods around any of them.
