What to Know About Texas Property Taxes
Tax Bills Are Due by January 31
Pay your tax bill by January 31 to avoid penalties and interest. Many owners escrow taxes through their mortgage payment.
File the Homestead Exemption Once
File with your county appraisal district once; it remains in place while you own and occupy the home as your primary residence.
Protest Deadlines Matter
If your appraised value looks too high, file a protest with your county appraisal district before the deadline on your Notice of Appraised Value.
Rates Vary by District
Your total rate is set by the school district, county, city, and special districts. Two similar homes can face different combined rates.
This estimator is an educational tool, not legal, financial, or tax advice. For your official numbers, check your county appraisal district's records and consult a tax professional.
Property Tax Questions
When are Texas property tax bills due?
Texas property tax bills are mailed in the fall and are due by January 31 of the following year. If taxes are not paid by that date, penalties and interest begin to accrue, so it pays to plan ahead.
Do I have to file for a homestead exemption every year?
No. Once you file the homestead exemption with your county appraisal district, it stays in place as long as you continue to own and occupy the home as your primary residence. You only need to file again if you move to a new home.
What should I do if my appraised value seems too high?
Protest deadlines matter. Watch the deadline on your Notice of Appraised Value and file a protest with your county appraisal district before it passes. For most homeowners you generally have until May 15, or 30 days after the notice is mailed, whichever is later.
