Hill Country Events: Early October Through the Holidays 2026
Fair week in New Braunfels wrapped up Sunday, and the Hill Country calendar rolls straight into the best stretch of the year. I went back through the community calendars, the festival sites, and the city event pages again today so this guide reflects the dates as they stand right now. From Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg this weekend to the powwow at Spring Lake, the lake party at Holiday Harbor, art weekend in Wimberley, Day of the Dead in San Antonio, the air show, and the first holiday lights of the season, there is a reason to be out in every one of these communities between now and Christmas.
A quick note on the earlier event guides on this blog: they stay up as an archive of the season so far. The guide from late September covered the Comal County Fair and Rodeo, the San Marcos Harvest Fest, Halloween in Wimberley, Wurstfest, and the Texas Book Festival, and it is still worth a read. The guide you are reading now is the one to bookmark, with the newest dates, locations, and official links as of today.
Between the German music in Fredericksburg this weekend and the choir voices on Main Plaza in New Braunfels in December, the next ten weeks show the Hill Country at its warmest. That is the rhythm people move here for, and it is the rhythm I help clients find every day.
Fredericksburg Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg anchors the first weekend of October on the Marktplatz, with German food, live music, local wine and beer booths, and a family crowd that shows how deeply the Hill Country holds its German heritage. It is an easy day trip from Canyon Lake or Wimberley, and it is the kind of weekend that makes newcomers understand why the region's small towns are so good at gathering.
More DetailsSacred Springs Powwow
The 16th annual Sacred Springs Powwow celebrates the Coahuiltecan and Native American heritage of this region with intertribal dancing, music, arts, and food at Spring Lake in San Marcos. It is a two-day event with real teaching behind it, hosted by the Indigenous Cultures Institute, and it is one of the most meaningful gatherings on the Central Texas calendar. Bring chairs and plan to stay.
More DetailsRocktoberfest on Canyon Lake
The Canyon Lake Junior Women's Club hosts Rocktoberfest at Holiday Harbor Park with live music, local brews, food vendors, a raffle, and the annual costume contest. Admission is free, and the beer-tasting card is the way to go. It is the lake community at its best: neighbors, live music, and a view of the water, all in one afternoon.
More DetailsWimberley Valley Arts Fest
More than 100 fine artists fill downtown Wimberley for the Wimberley Valley Arts Fest, with live music and food on the square. It arrives right in the middle of October, when the weather finally turns, and it is the best free introduction to the town's creative side. For anyone considering a move to Wimberley, spend one afternoon wandering the booths and you will meet half the town.
More DetailsDay of the Dead in San Antonio
San Antonio holds one of the biggest Day of the Dead celebrations in the country, and it is all free. The illuminated river parade on Friday night floats barges of dancers and mariachis down the River Walk, and Muertos Fest at Hemisfair brings more than 80 community altars, five stages of music and dance, workshops, and an artisan market across the weekend. The full celebration runs through November 2, and it is a vivid reminder of how this city honors family and faith out in the open.
More DetailsTexas Capital Air Show
The Texas Capital Air Show brings two days of aerobatics and military and vintage aircraft to San Marcos Regional Airport, with ground displays and family activities between performances. It is a favorite of kids and anyone who grew up around aviation, and an easy outing from Canyon Lake or New Braunfels. Buy tickets ahead; the good viewing spots go fast.
More DetailsFord Holiday River Parade
The 45th annual Ford Holiday River Parade turns on the River Walk's 200,000-plus holiday lights and sends a line of illuminated floats down the water the night after Thanksgiving. It is the official start of the San Antonio holiday season, and the lights stay glowing, free of charge, through early January. Bundle up, grab a spot along the river early, and let the kids stay up late.
More DetailsWassailfest in New Braunfels
New Braunfels rings in the holidays downtown with Wassailfest on Main Plaza: free wassail tastings, festive lights, and live music from local school choirs. It is small, warm, and genuinely local, the way a small-town Christmas should be. If you are thinking about making New Braunfels home, this is a lovely night to see the community at its friendliest.

“When someone asks me what the Hill Country is like in the fall, I tell them to just go downtown any weekend between now and Christmas. Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg, the powwow at Spring Lake, art weekend in Wimberley, the river parade in San Antonio, choir music on Main Plaza in New Braunfels. Every community here knows how to gather, and that is the reason people stay.”

If you are thinking about a move to any of these communities, pick the event closest to you and go. You will learn more about a town in one afternoon than a month of listing pages will teach you. And when you are ready to talk neighborhoods, property values, or what a move would actually look like, I am always glad to help.
