Hill Country Events: October 2026 and the Weeks Around It

Steve Giannone .
Hill Country October festival with string lights, vendor booths, and hay bales at golden hour

I went back through the community calendars again this week, because October in the Hill Country is when the calendar gets good. The weather finally behaves, the evenings stay long, and every town has at least one weekend worth planning a whole trip around. This update covers October and the first week of November, with the events I would actually go to and the ones I think matter most to anyone living here or scouting the area.

A quick note on the earlier event guides on this blog: they stay up as an archive of the season so far. The guide you are reading now is the one to bookmark. Everything here was rechecked this week with dates, locations, and official links, so it reflects the calendar as it stands today.

Between ACL in Austin, the cook-off out at the lake, the arts festival in Wimberley, the powwow at the headwaters in San Marcos, and the wine weekend in Fredericksburg, there is a reason to get out almost every weekend. That is the rhythm people move here for, and it is the rhythm I help clients find every day.

Live Music / Festival Zilker Park, Austin

Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival

October 2-4 and October 9-11, 2026 October 2-4 and October 9-11, 2026 Zilker Park, Austin

ACL returns to Zilker Park for two full weekends with more than one hundred bands across eight stages. The 2026 lineup runs deep, from Kings of Leon, Skrillex, and Twenty One Pilots to Lorde, Charli XCX, and Rufus Du Sol. It is the biggest weekend on the Austin calendar, and plenty of Hill Country folks drive in for the day. If you are moving from out of state and want a quick taste of Austin, this is about as Austin as it gets. Weekend passes sell out, but single day tickets are usually available.

It is a beautiful Sunday drive through the Hill Country at its most colorful, and it gives you a genuine feel for the countryside and small-town Texas that so many of my relocation clients fall in love with first.

Gruene Music & Wine Festival

October 8-11, 2026 October 8-11, 2026 Historic Gruene District, New Braunfels

The Gruene Music & Wine Festival brings four days of live music, Texas wines, and food to the historic Gruene district on the Guadalupe River. The festival benefits United Way of Comal County each year, and the setting, an old cotton town with the iconic dance hall that has been hosting music since 1878, is pure Hill Country charm. Pair it with a walk across the Guadalupe footbridge and dinner at the Gristmill, and you have one of the best weekend combinations in this part of Texas.

27th Annual Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce BBQ Cook-Off

Saturday, October 10, 2026 Saturday, October 10, 2026 3934 FM 2673, Canyon Lake

The Canyon Lake Chamber's annual BBQ Cook-Off is the lake community's big October gathering: cook teams lining up overnight, smoke filling the park all morning, and a steady line of neighbors and second-home owners judging the results all afternoon. There are often live tunes, vendors, and a good crowd of people you will run into again at the grocery store or the boat ramp. For anyone scouting Canyon Lake as a place to live, this is one of the friendliest afternoons of the year. It lands the same weekend as the lake's Rocktoberfest, so you can cover both lake gatherings in a single trip.

The 19th annual Wimberley Valley Arts Festival brings more than one hundred fine artists to the downtown square and the streets around it, with live music and food vendors in between the booths. It is a juried show, so the work is consistently strong, and the setting, live oak shade and the art scene that put Wimberley on the map, does the rest. If you are thinking about the local art scene and the small town rhythm, this is the weekend to see it at its best.

October is when Fredericksburg does its biggest food and wine weekend: chef tastings, Texas wine pours, a signature Main Street dinner, and live music spread across the historic downtown. It is a scenic Hill Country drive from the lake, and for anyone planning a fall getaway around the wineries at their best, this is the standout weekend of wine month. The town books up early, so lock in plans well ahead if you are serious about going.

Texas Capital Air Show

November 7-8, 2026 November 7-8, 2026 San Marcos Regional Airport, San Marcos

On the southern edge of the Hill Country, San Marcos hosts one of the state's friendliest air shows, with aerial performances, static aircraft on display, and plenty of family seating. It happens the same weekend as Wurstfest draws visitors to New Braunfels, so you can catch the air show and a Wurstfest lunch in the same weekend. Bring chairs and ear protection for the kids, and plan for a full day outside.

Planning the Month Across the Hill Country

A few notes from my years around here that might help you plan the season:

  • Canyon Lake does October in one big weekend. The Chamber's BBQ Cook-Off near the community center lands Saturday, October 10, with the weekend's other lake gathering over at Holiday Harbor the same day. For buyers scouting homes, those two days show you who lives here and why they stay.
  • The dance hall matters again. Gruene's Music & Wine Festival runs October 8 through 11, and Gruene Hall hosts a steady run of shows around it. Tickets sell out, so grab them early.
  • Wimberley has two different October weekends. The Arts Festival lands October 17-18 downtown, then the BOO! Hole Halloween party takes over Blue Hole on the 24th. One weekend for the art, the next for the kids.
  • San Marcos spans the whole stretch. The Sacred Springs Powwow starts the month at Spring Lake on October 3-4, and the Texas Capital Air Show closes the arc November 7-8 at the airport. Two very different events, one gateway river town.
  • Wine month officially has a full calendar. Texas Wine Month runs the entire stretch with the passport, and the Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival wraps it up October 22-25. Any weekend works, just do not leave the month without using the passport once.

“When someone asks me what it is like to live in the Hill Country, I tell them to come out for a month like this one. Every weekend there is a different reason to be outside, a different town to walk, and a different group of neighbors to meet. October has always been one of my favorite months to show somebody a new community.”
