Hill Country Events Update: Late Summer Through the Holidays
I went through the event calendars again this week across every community I serve in the Hill Country. A few of the summer concerts have wrapped up, and several new events have appeared on the calendar that I had not caught in our earlier guides. The fall season in the Hill Country is one of the best times of year here, and the events calendar reflects that.
This update adds ten events I confirmed this week. Some are brand new to the site — the Labor Day Luau Weekend in Canyon Lake, Sundance Head at Brookshire Brothers Patio, the Witches/Warlocks Halloween paddle event, and the Woman's Club Holiday Home Tour. Others are fall and holiday favorites that I am glad to have confirmed dates for: the Austin Bat Fest, the Peddle/Paddle Regatta on Canyon Lake, the Comal County Fair & Rodeo, the Canyon Lake BBQ Cook-Off, Fredericksburg Oktoberfest, and Dylan Gossett & Charles Wesley Godwin at Whitewater Amphitheater this Saturday.
If you have been following the site, you have seen our earlier event guides covering summer through the end of 2026. This edition is my freshest batch, focused on what is coming up between now and the holidays. A few of these are brand new events I had not spotted before, and I am glad to have them on the site now. As always, I recommend checking official event pages before you head out, since dates and times can shift.
Labor Day Luau Weekend — Canyon Lake
A Labor Day weekend celebration at Canyon Lake with food, drinks, live music, and community activities. This is the unofficial end-of-summer gathering for lake residents, and it is exactly the kind of relaxed weekend that defines the Canyon Lake lifestyle. The lake is still warm in early September, the crowds start to thin after Labor Day, and the evening light over the hills is beautiful. If you are considering a move to Canyon Lake, this is the weekend to come see what the community feels like at its most relaxed.
More DetailsDylan Gossett & Charles Wesley Godwin at Whitewater Amphitheater
Rising Americana artist Dylan Gossett shares the bill with Charles Wesley Godwin for a Saturday night on the Guadalupe River. Gossett has been getting a lot of attention in the Texas and Americana music scene this year. The lineup also includes Max Alan opening. Late August evenings at Whitewater are warm but comfortable, and the river breezes pick up as the sun goes down. If you have been wanting to catch a show at one of the Hill Country's best outdoor venues, this weekend is a good one.
More DetailsAustin Bat Fest
Austin's annual celebration of the largest urban bat colony in North America. Live music on multiple stages, over 100 arts and crafts vendors, food trucks, and the main event — watching 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset. It is one of those uniquely Austin experiences that draws visitors from across the country. For Hill Country residents, it is an easy drive in and a fun way to spend a late summer evening. The bat emergence happens right around sunset, so the sky over Town Lake is lit up gold as they take flight.
More DetailsPeddle/Paddle Regatta — Canyon Lake
A Canyon Lake tradition that celebrates exactly why people choose lake living. Kayakers, paddleboarders, and canoeists launch from Indian Beach for a morning on the water. No competition, just a community gathering on the lake. September is one of the best months to be on Canyon Lake — the summer crowds are gone, the water is still warm, and the morning light over the hills is stunning. If you are considering a move to Canyon Lake, this is the kind of event that shows you what the community is really about.
More DetailsComal County Fair & Rodeo — New Braunfels
One of the oldest county fairs in Texas, running since 1892. Carnival rides, livestock shows, live music every night, a rodeo, BBQ cook-off, and the kind of community spirit that the Hill Country does so well. The 132nd annual parade rolls through downtown on September 25 at 9 AM. The midway lights at night, the smell of fair food, and families walking the grounds together — this is what small-town Texas heritage feels like. For anyone considering a move to New Braunfels or Canyon Lake, the Comal County Fair is a perfect introduction to the community.
More DetailsSundance Head Live at Brookshire Brothers Patio — Canyon Lake
Sundance Head, the singer-songwriter and winner of NBC's "The Voice" (Season 11), performs live on the Canyon Lake Brookshire Brothers patio. This is the kind of free, low-key community concert that makes lake living special — a nationally recognized artist playing on a grocery store patio under the oaks, with neighbors gathering to listen. The Brookshire Brothers Party on the Patio series has become a Canyon Lake institution, running every Friday and Saturday through October. If you are new to the area, this is one of the best ways to meet people.
More DetailsFredericksburg Oktoberfest
The 46th annual Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg, and it is one of the best in Texas. German heritage comes alive with over 50 beers, Texas wines, live music on five stages, traditional German food, artisan vendors, and family activities in the historic Marktplatz downtown. Fredericksburg is about an hour from Canyon Lake and Wimberley, and it makes for a perfect Hill Country weekend. The drive through the rolling hills in early October, when the light is golden and temperatures are mild, is as good as it gets anywhere.
More Details27th Annual Canyon Lake BBQ Cook-Off
An annual Canyon Lake tradition. Local teams compete for the best brisket, ribs, chicken, and sausage while neighbors and visitors sample the results. Live music, a silent auction, and the kind of community gathering that defines lake living. October in the Hill Country is about as good as it gets weather-wise — cool mornings, warm afternoons, and the smell of smoked meat in the air. If you are new to Canyon Lake or thinking about a move, this is the weekend to come see what this community is really about.
More DetailsWitches/Warlocks Paddle/Peddle — Canyon Lake Halloween
A Halloween-themed paddle and bicycle event on Canyon Lake. Participants dress up in costume and take to the water on kayaks, paddleboards, or canoes (or to the road on bikes) for a festive morning on and around the lake. This is exactly the kind of creative, community-driven event that makes lake living so enjoyable — where else do you get a witch on a paddleboard at sunrise? October mornings on Canyon Lake are crisp and beautiful, and this event is fun for participants and spectators alike.
More DetailsWoman's Club Holiday Home Tour — Canyon Lake
A Canyon Lake holiday tradition hosted by the Canyon Lake Woman's Club. Tour beautifully decorated homes in the Canyon Lake community, with refreshments and holiday shopping along the way. This is the kind of small-town holiday event that captures exactly why the Hill Country feels like home during the Christmas season. December in Canyon Lake is mild and clear, and seeing how neighbors decorate their lake homes is a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit. If you are considering a move to Canyon Lake, this tour shows you the pride and warmth of the community.
More DetailsMaking the Most of Late Summer and Fall in the Hill Country
A few things I have learned from my years in Central Texas that might help you plan the next few months:
- Labor Day weekend is the last big summer push on the lake. After that, Canyon Lake settles into its quieter season, and that is when many residents say it is at its best. The water is still warm through September, the crowds thin out, and the evenings are beautiful.
- Fairs and festivals are what make fall in the Hill Country special. The Comal County Fair, Fredericksburg Oktoberfest, and the Canyon Lake BBQ Cook-Off all happen in a six-week span. That is not a coincidence — October and early November are about as good as the weather gets anywhere, and communities across the region celebrate it.
- Outdoor events on the lake are one of a kind. The Peddle/Paddle Regatta and the Witches/Warlocks Halloween paddle event are both the kind of community activities that only exist in a lake town. If you are new to Canyon Lake or considering a move, these events give you a real sense of what the community values — being on the water, being outdoors, and having fun together.
- Free concerts at Brookshire Brothers are a Canyon Lake institution. Every Friday and Saturday through October, the Brookshire Brothers patio hosts live music. Sundance Head on October 3 is a highlight — a nationally recognized artist performing for free on a grocery store patio under the oaks. That is about as Canyon Lake as it gets.
- Holiday events fill up fast. The Woman's Club Holiday Home Tour in early December is popular, and smaller holiday events across the Hill Country draw loyal crowds. If holiday traditions matter to you, put these on the calendar early.
- Use events to explore a community you are considering. If you are thinking about a move to Canyon Lake, Wimberley, New Braunfels, or anywhere in the Hill Country, attending a local event tells you more about a community than any website can. You will see how people interact, what they value, and whether it feels like home.
"The Hill Country has a way of bringing people together — at paddle regattas, at BBQ cook-offs, at community holiday tours, and around backyard tables. If you are thinking about making this area home, come spend a weekend here. You will understand why people do not leave."
