Hill Country Events: Mid-October Through the Holidays 2026

October has arrived, and I went back through the festival sites, the music calendars, and the city event pages again this morning so this guide reflects the dates as they stand right now. The early-October guide stays up on the blog with the Oktoberfest weekend, the Sacred Springs Powwow, and the Wimberley Arts Fest, and it is still worth a read. The guide you are reading now adds the events with confirmed dates for the weeks ahead: the Gruene Music and Wine Festival this coming weekend, Wurstfest, Luminaria in San Antonio, Wimberley's Christmas parade, the holiday lights across San Marcos, San Antonio, and Austin, and more.

This is the stretch of the year when the Hill Country is at its best. The weather turns, every town has a reason to gather, and the lake and river communities light up for the holidays. Below are the featured events with their dates, locations, and official links, followed by a few more notes worth putting on the calendar.

Music / Festival / Weekend Gruene Historic District, New Braunfels

Gruene Music and Wine Festival

Four days, Thursday through Sunday October 8-11, 2026 Gruene Historic District, New Braunfels

The Gruene Music and Wine Festival takes over the historic district for four days, and the Gruene Hall lineup this year is one of the best of the season: Robert Earl Keen opens Thursday night, and Stars and Guitars with Shane Smith and the Saints takes the stage Friday. Wine tastings, vendors, and nonstop music fill the streets in between. Gruene is ten minutes from New Braunfels and twenty from Canyon Lake, which makes it an easy evening out for anyone already living here or just scouting the area.

Wurstfest

Ten days, opening ceremonies Friday, November 6; free admission Monday through Thursday November 6-15, 2026 Wurstfest Grounds, Landa Park, 120 Landa St, New Braunfels

The 65th annual Wurstfest is the biggest party on the Central Texas calendar, and it is as German-Texan as New Braunfels itself: more than 40 bands across five stages, carnival rides, and enough sausage and cold beer to feed the whole Hill Country. Kids twelve and under get in free every day, and weekday nights that second week are free to enter. If you are weighing a move to New Braunfels, this is the week the whole town shows off.

Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival

6 PM to midnight Saturday, November 14, 2026 Houston Street, downtown San Antonio

San Antonio's free night-arts festival fills downtown Houston Street with large-scale installations, live music, dance, and light works from local and national artists. It runs from early evening to midnight, it is free, and it is the kind of night that reminds you how much creative energy this city carries. Worth the drive down I-35 for anyone in the Hill Country.

Zoo Lights

Evenings, after dark November 18 through December 31, 2026 San Antonio Zoo, 3903 N St Mary St, San Antonio

The San Antonio Zoo becomes a river of light every holiday season, with millions of lights, illuminated animal sculptures, and warm spots to stop for photos and hot chocolate. It is the happiest kind of evening for families with young kids, and it runs long enough that you can pick a night that suits your calendar between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

Wimberley's Hometown Holidays: Tree Lighting and Lighted Christmas Parade

Tree lighting at 5 PM; parade steps off at 6 PM Saturday, November 28, 2026 Downtown Wimberley; parade steps off from Lions Field, 601 FM 2325

Wimberley kicks off its Christmas season the Saturday after Thanksgiving with the tree lighting and Lighted Christmas Parade through downtown. Streets close early, neighbors line the route, and Santa is not far behind. It is a quintessential Hill Country small-town night, and it pairs perfectly with the EmilyAnn Trail of Lights that opens the same weekend. If you are considering a move to Wimberley, this is the night the community is at its most welcoming.

Holiday / Family / Carnival Plaza Park, San Marcos

Sights and Sounds of Christmas

5:30 PM to 11 PM each night December 3-5 and 10-12, 2026 Plaza Park, San Marcos

San Marcos turns Plaza Park into a riverfront winter carnival for six nights in December: carnival rides, concerts, a petting zoo, a food court, and thousands of lights along the San Marcos River. It is a beloved family tradition that has run for decades, and it is close enough to Canyon Lake and New Braunfels that it is an easy evening trip. The ice rink and the 5K fun run are part of the same celebration.

Culture / Holiday / Free San Antonio River Walk

Las Posadas at the River Walk

Nightly processions, Friday through Sunday December 4-6, 2026 San Antonio River Walk

Las Posadas re-creates Mary and Joseph's search for lodging as a candlelit river procession on the San Antonio River Walk, with music, storytelling, and cultural performances along the banks. It is free, it is deeply rooted in San Antonio tradition, and it is one of the most moving nights of the holiday season in Texas. Bring a coat and find a spot on the river early.

Austin Trail of Lights

7 PM to 10 PM on free nights: December 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, and 18 December 10-23, 2026 Zilker Park, Austin

The 62nd annual Trail of Lights strings more than two million lights through Zilker Park, and general admission is free on seven nights this year. It draws a big crowd, so plan for the parking shuttle or a rideshare, but it is one of the great holiday walks in Texas. For anyone relocating to the Austin side of the Hill Country, it is a wonderful way to see the city at its most festive without the traffic of a workday commute.

More Dates Worth Putting on the Calendar

A few more local favorites, straight from the official sources this morning:

  • The 27th Annual Canyon Lake BBQ Cook-Off is Saturday, October 10. The chamber tradition runs all day at 3934 FM 2673, with cook teams, music, and the lake community out in force. Details on the Canyon Lake Chamber calendar.
  • Downtown Spooktacular trick-or-treats on Main Plaza October 29. New Braunfels parents bring the kids in costume from 5 to 7 PM, and it is as small-town friendly as it gets.
  • Farmer Fred's Harvest Fall Carnival comes to San Marcos October 30. Free games, a haunted hayride, and a costume contest at City Park the night before Halloween.
  • Wimberley Market Days returns November 7 and December 5. First Saturday of the month, 7 AM to 4 PM at Lion's Field on FM 2325, rain or shine. It is the best way to meet the town.
  • The EmilyAnn Trail of Lights opens November 28. The eight-acre walking trail of lighted exhibits at the EmilyAnn Theatre runs through December 26, free with donations encouraged.
  • Gruene Hall keeps its fire going through the holidays. James McMurtry plays with BettySoo on November 6, and Aaron Watson plays the weekend after Thanksgiving, November 27-28. Tickets go early.
  • Canyon Lake's holiday traditions come in December. The Noon Lions Christmas Parade down FM 2673 in Sattler and the CRRC's North Pole Village with Santa and treats for the kids are the two dates the lake community circles; watch the Canyon Lake POA calendar as the official dates are confirmed.
  • The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar runs December 12-21 in Austin. More than 200 artists, live music every night, and the most Austin holiday shopping experience there is, at the Palmer Events Center.

“I tell buyers and sellers the same thing every fall: the Hill Country does not hide its best months. From the music festival in Gruene to Wurstfest in New Braunfels to the parade in Wimberley, the calendar from October through Christmas is the reason people move here. Pick the event closest to you and go. You will meet the neighbors before you ever sign a contract.”
